History of Bank

There is a glamour in the name of Gauhati as gateway of North East Region /Assam and to earn glamour of the banks name as The Gauhati Cooperative Urban Bank Ltd. It is functioning non-stop since 1965.

                            On 11.01.1965 an informal meeting of some leading cooperators of the city was held at the office of the state Cooperative Union at Gauhati .Sri T Borooah who was nominated as member of the Board of Directors of the bank by Govt and also served on the Ad-hoc Board as secretary and discharged the duties of General Manager took active part in organizing the meeting at which the Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Assam was also present and who took pains to explain the position of the state Govt and the Reserve Bank policies in this connection .In accordance with the decision taken in the said meeting, the inaugural meeting of the bank was held on 16/02/1965 at the same place and proposed byelaws were duly adopted subject to approval and modification, if any by the state Govt. An Ad-hoc Board of Directors was elected in the said inaugural meeting for running the business of the bank.

                            The original idea was to establish this bank for the whole of the state but as it was objected by the Deptt the area of its operation had to be limited to the Gauhati Town and localities within 5(Five) miles of its boundaries. Thereafter, the bank was duly registered by the Registrar of cooperative Societies, Assam as per the Assam Cooperative Societies Act,1949 under regtn.No G-11/64-65 dt.01/05/1965.
